DIY Project – Repairing a Dresser – Time to Paint, Again

After getting the “I told you so,” from my wife, Efiwym, I started my Internet search for black paint.  I found the least expensive black paint at our favorite home improvement store.  With a list of other things to buy, like new roller covers for the mini roller, we were off to the store.

When we got to the store, we looked at the different paint samples.  We definitely wanted a flat or matte finish to hide the nicks and dents on the dresser.  What was frustrating was we could not find a “black” paint color.  The sample stated black, but it looked gray.  We picked the color that was closest to black and purchased a quart of paint.

We started on the new painting project when we got home.  The plan was that we both work on painting the dresser.  We had 2 mini rollers.  Unfortunately, the new roller cover did not fit tightly on one of the mini rollers.  The roller cover would fall off easily and after several tries by Efiwym to make the mini roller work, she gave up.  The paint project was now mine.

I was not disappointed, Efiwym could not help.  The color went on gray. If that is how it would dry, it would work.  The paint was going on well.  I did not rough up the initial paint coat and that did not affect the coverage.  One coat will cover it.  As I finished the drawers and cabinet, I stepped back to check for missed parts.  (The lighting in the garage is not the greatest, even with the garage door open.)

Once I was done, I tried to get all the paint out of the roller cover by painting the back side of the dresser.  Between both roller covers, I was able to completely paint the back of the dresser.  Efiwym was nice enough to clean up the roller covers and a paint brush as I cleaned up the garage.

I would go in the garage throughout the day to check on the paint job.  The dresser looked great, and the color dried to a chalkboard black.  The next day I put the drawers into the cabinet and stepped back to admire my work.  I gleefully let Efiwym know how great the dresser looked.  Jokingly, I told her we should have painted it with a roller.  With that comment, I just got “the look.”

For some reason, we did not have 10 matching drawer knobs.  Maybe we used some of the old knobs for other projects.  Nonetheless, we needed to go back to the home improvement store to buy drawer knobs.

We talked about getting wooden ones that we could paint them to match the dresser.  But as we checked out the hardware, the wooden knobs were more expensive than the metal ones.  Efiwym was not happy that we spent money on 2 cans of black spray paint, a quart of black paint and now hardware for this supposedly inexpensive remake of a dresser.  However, we found a pack of 10 black knobs that both agreed would work.

Once I installed the knobs, the project was almost done.  To prevent the drawers from pulling out completely, I cut 2-inch pieces from a wooden paint stirrer and screwed them on the inside of the back of the drawer.  Nothing fancy, but it worked.  Efiwym came up with the idea as we were waiting for the paint to be shaken at the home improvement store.

Now, the only thing left was to get the dresser to my daughter’s house.  As of this writing, the dresser is still in our garage…
