DIY Project – Leaking Toilet – Another One – New Toilet – The Floor

Efiwym, my wife, hated our powder room floor.  The white background of the faux tile vinyl floor was yellowing.  The floor had a pattern of pink and blue flowers.  The walls were recently painted a mint color. She talked about replacing the floor many times, and I did not want to pull the toilet, so I mainly ignored her.

Since I needed to replace the toilet, she could get a new floor.  I fretted about making this project longer than one day.  I think we could survive two days without a toilet on the first floor, but it still bothered me.  I could easily add another layer to the two layers of vinyl flooring already in the powder room.  The engineered wood floor that was in the hallway was slightly higher than the powder room floor.  However, I would put down a thin metal threshold anyways.

Efiwym wanted luxury vinyl plank flooring in the powder room.  We already have three different wood floors in the house, why not add faux wood vinyl plank flooring to the mix.  I was not convinced.  We decided to go to our favorite home improvement store to shop for flooring.

We went to the store and walked around the flooring department.  We found the rolls of sheet vinyl flooring where you can buy it in the 12-foot widths. We needed only the flooring to be 5 feet deep, so there would be extra.  I found the exact flooring we have in the two bathrooms upstairs and in the mudroom.  I surmised that we could buy enough to do the powder room and the laundry room.  All those rooms would have matching flooring. Efiwym was not swayed.  She wanted a wood-like floor.

We found a wood-like sheet vinyl flooring.  Again, we would have a lot of waste, so again, we would replace the laundry room floor with this flooring. (Pulling a toilet and fitting a small powder room with sheet vinyl flooring is not a difficult project.  Removing the washer, the dryer and the laundry tub in the laundry room was a project that probably would not happen in my lifetime.)  So, we tentatively selected the flooring.  As we walked around looking for a sales clerk, Efiwym, found rolls of flooring.  The sheets of vinyl flooring were six-foot by nine-foot.  The price was right: $25.00.  Some waste, but no commitment to the laundry room.  I was onboard.  We found two wood-like vinyl floorings. One had a plank pattern, but the color was too light.  The other was just a wood grain.  It looked like a continuous sheet of stained wood floor. I would like the flooring to look like planked flooring, but the latter would work.

We put the roll into the cart and went to find the wood-like metal threshold.  I was hesitant to buy any floor adhesive.  I knew I had some at home from my mudroom flooring project last year. We did some additional shopping, like we always do in this store.  I had everything I needed to start the project.  I just needed to pick a weekend soon.
