DIY Project – Leaking Toilet – Another One – New Toilet – The Floor – Old Toilet
(For the first time with a DIY project, I started taking pictures as I got into the project. So, you now have something to look at instead of just reading my writing.)
I have laid vinyl sheet goods before. In fact, I did the powder room floor once before. Just recently I put new flooring in the mudroom. That project was published in a blog post, DIY Project – Laying Vinyl Flooring (https://zenandtheartofdiy.blog/diy-project-laying-vinyl-flooring/). I think I have gotten pretty good at laying sheet vinyl. I watched many DIY shows and I am comfortable taking on this project. But first I needed to remove the toilet.
The original reason for this project was to replace the toilet. The flooring was a “you may as well” project. Since I was changing out the toilet, it would be a great time to replace the flooring. I would also get bonus points from my wife, Efiwym, for complying with her request to replace it.
So, my first step was to remove the toilet. Been there, done that. I shut off the water to the toilet, flushed the toilet one last time and patiently removed as much water from the bowl as possible. Next was removing the two nuts holding the toilet to the floor. Of course, one nut would come off easily and the second would be a bear. Out comes the hack saw to remove it. URRGH! A small but frustrating delay, however, the toilet was removed and put out in the garage.
I cleaned up the toilet flange and floor of the wax and stuff then shoved a rag into the waste pipe to keep the stink in. The flange was loose and some of the screws were stripped out. The flange was in decent shape, so I did not need to replace it. I replaced the screws with larger ones and added two more around the flange. However, it was time to replace the floor, not the toilet.
