I watched my share of DIY and home improvement shows. Starting with the initial shows of PBS’s This Old House with Bob Vila and then with multitude of cable shows, I sat through hundreds, maybe thousands of episodes. Sometimes, I would watch reruns multiple times.
There were shows I truly enjoyed that were canceled like, Hometime with Dean Johnson, and The New Yankee Workshop with Norm Abrams. There were series that I watched because I like the hosts, like Mike Holmes and Bryan Baeumler. Both Canadians had several series that were enjoyable to watch. They had high standards for construction quality, however, Brian was just humorous.
I always cringed when I watched, First Time Flippers. My blood pressure would rise as I watched people do idiotic and dangerous things. I like shows that focus on the how-to-do construction process. Most shows on TV spend little time on this subject and way too much time on the interior design. Tell me how to install a flush wood beam to remove a bearing wall and you can keep the discussion on the multicolored pillows.
When there is nothing on TV, my go to is some DIY show, even if it is a rerun. My wife, Efiwym, would prefer a food show instead. That is why I would watch my shows when she is not around and flip it to a food show when she comes into the room.
