Before I would take down any cabinet doors and show the world that we have an unfinished project in the house, Efiwym and I would need to make a decision about the cabinet hardware. I hate unfinished projects. I wanted to buy hinges to hang the new doors, but I could not buy hinges until we knew the hardware finish.
Regardless that I would have to remove the doors and expose the messy inside of our cabinets, I would have the new doors hung in 2-3 days. Without hinges, it could be longer.
I no longer was a satin nickel fan. I installed satin nickel hardware in the bathrooms and laundry room. We were now leaning towards oil-rubbed bronze. The hardware would match the light fixtures in the kitchen and dinette. Additionally, the brownish color would not be as intrusive as satin nickel against the medium brown wood stain finish. Efiwym convinced me to use doorknobs for the cabinet doors, but I was insistent that we use door pulls for the drawers. I was not looking at anything large. Again, I did not want the look of the cabinets to be all about the hardware.
I spent some time looking at cabinet hardware online. I looked at the websites of two big box home improvement stores. I found hardware with a “cocoa” bronze finish. The finish was more a solid brown than an oil-rubbed bronze. The manufacturer had matching pulls and knobs, but no hinges. I decided that the oil-rubbed bronze hinges would be close enough. Now I needed to convince Efiwym.
She was sitting on the other side of the couch. I passed over the iPad for her to look at the hardware I had on the screen. As she grabbed the iPad, she changed the page on the screen. She scrolled around and found the right page. I was not looking at her as she studied the screen. It seemed there was an extended time of silence. Then she said, “Looks good.” I explained that I would need to buy the oil-rubbed bronze hinges online, but the pulls and knobs I could buy at the store. She seemed disinterested in the minutiae but gave me some acknowledgement with a few head nods.
I ordered the hinges online right away to get them here by the middle of the week. I took screen shots of the pulls and knobs to print them out to take them to the store with me. I was anticipating removing the doors next weekend.
I stopped at the store to pick up the knobs and pulls. Well, according to their website they had plenty of the hardware I needed at the closest store. That was not the case. I was short 3 knobs. So much for trusting their website. While at the store, I looked up the inventory at a store on the other side of town. The store had more than three. After just giving up trusting the website, I went to that store to get the remaining knobs.
I was successful retrieving the three knobs I needed. I had all the hardware, except the hinges. The hinges should be delivered tomorrow.
The hinges arrived just as I put on the last coat of polyurethane on the cabinet doors and drawer fronts.
