DIY Project – Under Cabinet Light – Time For A New One

Efiwym, my wife, had been pressuring me to replace the fluorescent under cabinet light by the desk in the dinette.  It was difficult to turn it on.  Hence, we did not use it much.

The under-cabinet light was one of the projects I wanted to tackle when we first bought the house.  I am not sure why; maybe they were popular back then or we thought the kids could do their homework there.  Nonetheless, I installed an under-cabinet light.

Obviously, I needed some power for the light.  There was an outlet located under the cabinet.  Perfect!  I would just splice into that outlet for the power.  Nothing difficult with this project.  Yank out the outlet box.  Punch a hole in the drywall in the cabinet. Drill a hole in the bottom of the cabinet and run some metal-armored BX wiring to the under-cabinet light.

Why use metal-armored BX wiring?  Well, plastic-sheathed NM cable could be damaged easier when taking things in and out of the cabinet.  I thought I really did a nice job on the wiring.  I installed the proper connectors and used clamps to hold the BX cable in place.  The installation went well and there it was…an under-cabinet light that we barely used.

We finally made the trip to the place where you save big money because we got 15% off everything you could fit in a bag.  Efiwym insisted that we do not put the items in the bag.  She just grabbed a bag and placed it on the conveyor with the items we purchased, which included a 16-inch LED hard-wired/plug-in under-cabinet light.  The cashier indicated that was fine, but he needed to measure the length of the light.  It could not exceed two times the height of the bag.  Well, it did not.

We headed home for me to start on the project…tomorrow.
