After a heavy rain, my wife, Efiwym, noticed the drywall on the wall was wet in our main bathroom the following morning.
She texted me, indicating that the shower was leaking. Oh no, not my DIY project from three years ago. I texted her back and asked exactly where the leak was. She texted back that it was located about four feet above the floor approximately where the seam between the drywall boards met. She texted a picture of the wall. That is a strange location of a plumbing leak.
I let her know that the location was not behind the shower. (Phew!) However, I believed it was a roof leak. (Not good.) It could be a vent pipe or an air vent. So, I took a quick drive back home to take a look. I just walked to the back of the back yard and looked up at the roof. The vent pipe lined up closely to the location of the leak. As I squinted hard at the pipe, I noticed that the rubber boot was cracked.
This leak might have been going on for a while. We had some staining on our kitchen ceiling, which I thought was the toilet in our master bathroom. In fact, I was so lazy the day before, I was going to pull the toilet and replace the wax ring with a silicone one. But I talked myself out of it insisting that we needed to replace the toilet because the tank lid was cracked. And Efiwym agreed. So, I did nothing that day. (I did fix my daughter’s vacuum cleaner, so it wasn’t a totally wasted day.) But I digress. That stain lined up where the leak in the main bath was.
This should be an easy fix, if I wanted to get out the extension ladder and climb on the second story roof. I know Efiwym would prefer that I would not…
