I refused to start the demo until the new shower parts were delivered. I was not sure why. Maybe I was afraid that if it did not arrive, we would have an unusable shower forever. The shower enclosure arrived as scheduled, and I was ready for demo.
We were going to remove the drop ceiling over the shower and make the ceiling flush with the rest of the bathroom. This demo was going to be a one-man operation in this 5 foot by 8 foot space. Efiwym, my wife, however would be my debris collector and remover.
My Ryobi® reciprocating saw would do most of the work. I removed the drop ceiling first and started on the shower. The saw tore through the shower walls freely. Soon I had the shower in small enough pieces to remove them from the room. In retrospect, I should have covered the bathroom floor better as the demo created dents and scrapes.
Because all the blown-in insulation came down with the demo, I needed to apply new insulation in the ceiling. I also had to replace the insulation on the outside wall of the shower area.
Efiwym would take some of the larger pieces of debris and toss them out the back bedroom window. The smaller pieces she would gather in plastic bags or cardboard boxes. Her help made the demo a lot easier.
