I pulled the corner rounds around the vanity and removed the baseboards. The trim was still marked for their location from the last time I replaced the floor. I checked the door jamb to see if I needed to undercut it so I could slip the flooring under it. Apparently, I undercut the jamb too much last time. I had plenty of room for the flooring. I find that putting the flooring under the jamb makes the installation easier and it looks better than trying to cut the flooring around the jamb.
Now it was time to create the floor template. I have made the template different ways. Once I used heavy paper and cut around the walls to create the template. I now use strips of cardboard and hot glue them together to create the outside perimeter of the floor. The cardboard strips are approximately 6 inches wide. I just piece the cardboard together by putting hot glue on the joints.
Once I am done, I remove the template and put it on the vinyl flooring. I tape it down with painters’ tape and take advantage of the factory edges when I line it up. It does not need to be perfect, except by the door opening. Even though I was going to put down a threshold, I wanted the flooring to be tight up against the wood floor. With a marker, I draw lines along the outer edge of the template. Once I had the template drawn out on the flooring, it was ready to be cut.
With a fairly sharp pair of scissors, I cut along the black lines. Again, it did not need to be perfect, as I had baseboards and quarter-rounds to hide the edges. I just tried to keep it straight on the lines. I made sure I had the door opening edge on the factory edge of the flooring. No need to cut there. Now it was time to install.
