DIY Project – Installing an Above Ground Swimming Pool – The Retaining Wall

The contractor excavated an area behind the pool where there was a three-foot hill.  Before I could start the pool deck, I needed to build a retaining wall.  Using 6 x 6 inch pressure-treated timbers, I started laying the base for the retaining wall.  Once I had the first layer level, I secured the timbers with 1/2-inch rebar.  Pounding in the rebar was a workout.

Before I backfilled the wall, I placed down a plastic drain tile behind the wall.  On top of the drain tile I put down a layer of stone gravel.

One row at a time, I built the wall.  I would put deadman anchors intermittently in each row of the wall. Backfilling as I went, the wall was done.  The wall is about 30 inches high and is still in place today.  Efiwym talks about removing it, but it is the only remnant of the pool.  Except for some decay on the timbers on the edges of the wall, after 33 years the wall is still in great shape.
