DIY Project – Dishwasher Air Gap – The Leak was Back

Efiwym, my wife, noticed water puddling again by the back and side of the sink.  My initial reaction was the hose was clogged again.  I got some coaxial cable and tried to clear the blockage.

The cable kept going down the dishwasher side of the hose.  I tried several times to no avail.  (I later discovered I was supposed to put the cable into the tube in the air gap.)  I tried to run the cable from the inside of the garbage disposal. That was an impossible task.  I gave up.

However, I discovered that the cap of the air gap was loose.  The piece to hold the cap in place was cracked. The waste hose was not blocked, the air gap was broken.  The water was leaking because the cap did not divert the water completely to the tube.

I made my pronouncement.  “The air gap needs to be replaced!”

The problem was I do not like working under the sink.  My old body no longer is flexible to twist and bend to work in a kitchen cabinet under the sink.  Besides the need to remove the multiple bottles of cleaning supplies, there were waste pipes and a huge garbage disposal in the way.  I was hoping I could replace the air gap without the need to lay under the sink. Let the fun begin…
